Bristol Currency Helping Local Community
The Bristol Pound (£B) is a form of local complementary currency, or community currency launched in Bristol, with its objective to encourage people to spend their money with local, independent businesses.
Launched in the UK on 19 September 2012, the Bristol Pound is the UK’s first city wide local currency. It’s the first to have electronic accounts managed by a regulated financial institution, and the first that can be used to pay some local taxes. It has the equivalent of £700,000 in circulation and has put the spotlight on ways to help build community connections and support the local economy.
